Below is a collection of links to helpful online resources for writing, editing, web work, and general inspiration (what's been inspiring me lately). Note: All links open in a new browser window.

The New York Times Magazine's "On Language" Column: "On Language" has appeared in The New York Times Magazine since 1979. The current columnist, Ben Zimmer, answers a language-related question from a reader every other week; past questions and answers are archived on this web page. (If you haven't already, you'll need to register at the New York Times website to gain access to these articles.)

Arts & Letters Daily: This website houses a carefully culled collection of news, reviews, essays, and opinion pieces.

The Chicago Manual of Style Q & A: On this web page, the manuscript editing department at the University of Chicago Press answers your questions about style.

The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr.: The classic reference book for writers and editors is available online at this site.

Webmonkey: The Web Developer's Resource: Webmonkey offers a vast collection of resources for web developers of all levels—beginners to masters. It includes a how-to library and quick reference guides on a variety of topics, including a JavaScript code library, an HTML cheat sheet, and a list of web-safe color codes.

Joel Sklar Consulting: Joel Sklar, author of several excellent books on web design, provides tons of useful information on his site about HTML, XML, CSS, and various aspects of web design.

Web Style Guide: This site is immensely useful for both beginning and advanced web designers. Here you will find an online version of the third edition of Patrick J. Lynch and Sarah Horton's Web Style Guide: Basic Design Principles for Creating Web Sites, a practical guide to all aspects of web design.

Art+Culture: This inspiring website is the ultimate guide to all arts: film, literature, music, performing arts, visual arts, and all types of design, including fashion design, furniture design, and graphic design.

3191 Miles Apart: Two friends living 3,191 miles apart created this site as a sort of daily visual conversation between them. The photos are striking and inspiring, and they embrace the beauty of ordinary, everyday moments. Their previous online projects, 3191: A Year of Mornings and 3191: Evenings, were both transformed into lovely books.

Kate Spade: "Classic elegance with a touch of wit." "Classic style infused with a modern, slightly off-center sensibility." These words describe Kate Spade's design philosophy, which is carried through her website.

RealSimple: Like its print companion, RealSimple magazine, this website features great photography and helpful tips for simplifying your life.

Epicurious: The online home of Gourmet and Bon Appétit magazines, this culinary website is one of the best sources for recipes—and all things food-related—on the Internet.

Cupcake Bake Shop: There are few things that brighten my day more than a cupcake. This blog is one of my favorite sources for unique cupcake recipes.

101 Cookbooks: This blog by vegetarian cookbook author and photographer Heidi Swanson is my current favorite source for healthful yet inventive recipes. And the photographs that accompany her recipes are simply gorgeous.

Orangette: Great writing. Great recipes. Great photography.... This "food-lit" blog by Molly Wizenberg will likely inspire you in some way.

Martha Stewart: The website of the woman who elevated everyday housework and tedious chores to an art offers information on everything from gardening and decorating to cooking and baking. Love her or hate her, you're sure to find useful information on this comprehensive—and aesthetically pleasing—website.

Yoga Journal: Whether you are new to yoga or an experienced yogi, you'll find this website to be a valuable virtual library of information on just about every aspect of the ancient tradition.

Mothering: Since I became a mommy, I visit this website from time to time for advice and inspiration as I try to raise happy and healthy children while maintaining some sort of balance in my life.

Simple Mom: Life Hacks for Home Managers: Each time I visit this site, I come away with a practical parenting tip, an organizing idea, or some other useful information that helps to make my life easier as a mom and "home manager." Simple Mom is part of the Simple Living Media network of sites, which also includes Simple Bites (a great source for family-friendly recipes), Simple Kids, Simple Organic, and Simple Homeschool.
